Laundry Design Ideas
There are a few basic types of laundry design. These include:
- The separated laundry - occupying its own room within the home
- Combined kitchen and laundry – this laundry style is common in apartment and smaller houses, where space is at a premium, and usually features the laundry appliances concealed within cabinetry
- Combined bathroom and laundry – this laundry style is typical of medium sized apartments and houses, that feature a second or guest bathroom, where the laundry is placed, with appliances in one section of the bathroom or concealed behind cabinetry
Points to consider when designing a contemporary Laundry Room
- Flooring – The first place to start the design of your laundry is starting from the floor up. Tile or vinyl are the best options although laminate or wood floors can be used as well
- Cabinets - If you don’t already have cabinets in your laundry room, you may want to consider adding them if you have room. Cabinetry, including drawers, would be the perfect option to store all your household supplies, including detergents and cleaning products. Not only will they add storage to your home, but they should also increase your home’s value
- Storage/Organisation - Make the most of your space and plan your laundry room for optimal storage and organization. If you don’t have room for cabinets, at least install a shelf over the washing machine and dryer
- Plumbing – the plumbing within the laundry is another area that needs special attention. The sinks and washing machines and the plumbing of these fixtures should be designed in an organised, efficient, leak-free manner, with a drainage system that can effectively handle any accidental water overflow
- Finishing Touches - Window treatments and possibly a laundry room rug will help to put the finishing touches on the room
- Venting – an important feature of any laundry design is an effective venting system, to expel humidity and odours from the laundry. Two common ways to route ductwork to vent laundry air outside, are through the ceiling and out through an exterior wall, or through the ceiling and out through the roof
N.B. Please also note that one of the most critical aspects in laundry renovations is proper waterproofing of wet areas, which is often not taken seriously and done using cheap materials.
When designing your laundry, it is important to consider the efficiency of the room as a whole, in much the same way as a working kitchen. This will add to the overall functionality of the laundry, as a working room. In addition the items you choose for the room should also compliment each other.
